Hi Hazel,
I've been to Lichfield & looked up the baptism of George Moss in the Quarnford parish registers.

12th May 1805 George, son of George & Keziah Moss of Coldshaw was baptised.

Colshaw is in Hollinsclough parish.

Hope this helps,
Lynda

Thank you so much for looking this up. I can now try and see how this fits in to what we already have. Good luck with the new message board. Hazel

Hi Hazel
I have no idea whether the following information is of any use to you but the name Keziah is (I think) quite unusual.  I wondered if it might be a family name ie handed down from mother to daughter etc.
By chance yesterday I came across Keziah Goodwyn, she witnessed the will of George Goodwyn in 1695.  I think that she was either married to or the daughter of a George Goodwyn.  I think that she is the first Keziah I have come across.
The George Goodwyn (testator) was "late of Longnor" but there had been two previous George Goodwyns, the elder and the younger.  They had been important because they had acted as agents for the Harpur family, collected rents, kept records and also had signed a lease for the rental of the mill in Longnor c1630 (can't remember the exact date).  According to the research carried out by our retired vicar, George junior had been taken prisoner during the 1645 Civil War and had been exchanged with another prisoner.  After 1645 George junior ceased to to be a Harpur agent.  The two Goodwyns were however very important in the community because the were educated, they wrote wills and other lagal documents, acted as witnesses and as executors.
Regards

Hi Victoria

Thanks for this info - I don't know anything about Keziah Moss at the moment, but as you say it's an unusual name, so she might well be a descendant of Keziah Goodwyn. I do know that in 19th century there were connections by marriage between "our" Mosses and some Goodwins, so there might have been earlier marriages too.

Hello again!

I think i've tracked down Keziah Moss using your site and Alstonfield records on Ancestry. 11/10/1790 George Moss married Keziah Moss, who I think could be daughter of John Moss who married Keziah Mottram 13/09/1759. Another Keziah Mottram was baptised  in 1768 - daughter of Matthew of Holesclough. Maybe he was brother of Keziah who married John Moss?  I've noticed on you site mentions of a book of burials at Flash. I'd be very grateful for info on how to obtain it, or if anyone could let me know about any Mosses buried there.

Thanks for you help,

Hazel

Hi All

I think I can help with more information on the beautiful name 'Keziah'.

Firstly, the oldest transcipt I have (but not as old as the 1695 one) is for 'Kezia ye daughter of Samuel Yates & Margaret his wife was Bapt of 2 of January 1702'. I presume this is the Samuel Yates of Mosscarr Brook.

Secondly, on 12th July 1739, 'Keziah daughter of Richard Mottram & his wife at Holes-Clough baptized'.

The same Keziah Mottram, aged 19 years and Chapman Brindley, witnessed the wedding of my ancestor Thomas Limer aged 21 years (bapt 1737) to Ellen Knowles aged 27 years (bapt 1731) on 28th August 1758 at Alstonefield. The IGI misrecords Ellen Knowles as 'Anne' for this transcript.

Keziah Mottram then married John Moss the following year in 1759.

As far as I can tell, the first female Limer to be born at Hollinsclough was called Keziah and so I have named one of my own daughters 'Keziah Limer' in recognition of this.

I hope the above information proves to be of use to you.

Best Regards

Nigel Limer

Hello Nigel
That's really nice.
I looked up the derivation of Keziah last year.  She was one of the "three fair daughters of Job".  The name is also Hebrew for the cassia tree (cinnamon).

Hello Nigel,

I was interested in the info re Keziah Mottram - she was presumably a friend of your ancestors. These little details help bring our ancestors to life.

I've just found your wonderful website. I too am looking for Moss ancestors from Hollinsclough. My 3xgreat grandfather John Moss was born there around 1810 accourding to the census. He was a shoemaker. He married Esther Wardle in Longnor in July 1830. She was baptised in 1809 in Quarnford.
I cannot find John's baptism. The only other thing I know is that he had a nephew, also called John, born around 1837.
Can anyone help? Other family names are Wardle and Goodwin.
All help gratefully received.

Hello Pam
Anyone who says we have a wonderful website needs to have a reply!  Sadly, Lyn & I haven't been able to do much to it recently but as winter (+ deep snow) looms, this may change.
If you send an email to me (v.rowe352@btinternet.com) I will send you information which I have retrieved from the various rentals.  In a nutshell, there were no Moss's paying rent in 1722. In 1736/37 there were William & Isaac.  In 1741/42, John, William, Nathan & Elias were recorded.  In 1758/59 - quite a lot!  In 1775 - quite a lot! In 1799/80 - William, John & John Senr are recorded.  In the latter rental there is a footnote as follows:
"John Moss of Brand Head has a son with 4 children.  The son is in service.  He is supposed not to be kindly disposed towards the son - but the son is extremely well recommended by Mr Goodwin, the master he lives with."
I don't think that there were any Moss's living in Hollinsclough by the late 1830's.

Hello Pam,

The nephew John that you mention is my husband's 2xgreatgrandfather. His father George was your John's brother. There was another brother called Isaac. They're all on censuses around Hollinsclough area. Their parents were George and Keziah as mentioned on this noticeboard. There are also a few details on the "old Noticeboard". I think George's father was another George.

I found this website very helpful when I was looking for these Mosses - I hope you do too.

Hi Hazel

I do not recall seeing your post about John Moss and George Moss being brothers. Have just revisited the forum after a long delay. I cannot find anything about the Moss family other than on this thread. I would be really grateful if you could let me have any further information eg date of Isaac's baptism and any further details on George's family. In return I would be happy to share what I know of John's family. My private email is pam.walker@blueyonder.co.uk.

Many thanks.

Pam

This looks like an old thread so I'm not sure anyone can help me.....started to research my family tree. My maternal grandfather was a Moss and I have been working my way up that line.

It looks like he is a descendant of George and Keziah's daughter, Mary (b. 1806). What I'm really confused about is that it looked like she had 2 children before she married her husband (a Thomas Mather) and one after. But the children are all called Moss, even the one born after they were married - Thomas Moss, my 2nd Great Grandfather.

On the 1841 census George and John Moss were in the same property as Isaac & Mary Moss (Not sure if brother and sister or man & wife - too many Mary's!) and then 10 children.

By the 1851 census 2 of the girls have gone to live with Mary and Thomas and most of the boys with Isaac (And no wife on the record).

Tying myself in knots!

Michelle

Hello Michelle,

My husband was a descendant of Mary's brother George Moss  but I don't know anything about Mary. Where did she and her husband/ children live? As you say there are too many Marys, also  Georges and Isaacs.

I haven't looked at this site for some time so maybe you've found out a bit more by now.

Hazel
