I know this isn't strictly Hollinsclough but it is next door and I'd welcome anyone's considerations on my problem.
My GG Grandmother Judith Lomas married Joseph Hodgkinson of Shellow Farm, at Chelmorton in Jan. 1832. I can't pick up the trail for Judith's parents.
In the 1851 Census Returns she was recorded as born in "Fairfield Head", Staffordshire, - that is the way the Enumerator wrote it down.
Later still, on another Census Return, for the response to the same question the enumerator recorded: "Golden Gates", Fairfield, Staffordshire.
I was initially struck by the similarity of Golden Gates and Gollengates, then I discovered that the original 1851 Census had recorded Fairfield Head and
the similarity to Fawfieldhead occurred to me.
So, does anyone have possible interpretations of these names Golden Gates/Gollengates and Fairfield Head/Fawfieldhead ?
However, this link http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Marriages&RecordID=2753297 shows the bride parish as Buxton, so I think Fairfield Head is probably right.
I see she was born approx 1806, so about 26 years of age at the time of her marriage, so it is still possible that she was widowed and that her birth name wasn't Lomas, although I accept this is unlikely.
